Nationalism in Europe, imperialism created rivalry in Europe, an arms race using new technology in warfare, and the scramble to attain territories.

Europe had reached its breaking point when Archduke Francis Ferdinand, who was the heir in Austria-Hungarian, was assassinated.

3.  How did the soldiers react as they went off to war? Why?

When soldiers went off the war they felt confident and had the desire to become heroes like the government portrayed the soldiers to be.
