During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher...I reined my horse to the precipitous brink of a black and lurid tarn that lay in unruffled luster by the dwelling...(with) vacant and eye-like windows.

 

A detail such as “During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day…” offers the connotation that the day was very sad and lonely and that there might have been a chill in the air with the clouds as low as they say they are.

Diction such as “through a singularly dreary tract of country” offers the connotation that the Man was a lonely old man with his horse and that he might have been sad because night was falling.

A detail such as “when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens” offers connotation because it is saying that he is lonely and that he has no other people in his life and that he
