The name Vera means truth. I think that Saki used this name to create irony because she lies to Mr. Nuttel saying that the boys had not come back for 3 yrs.

The story's last line is ironic because she did lie and she needed to to get intertained.

"A most extraordinary man, a Mr. Nuttel," said Mrs. Sappleton; "could only talk about his illnesses, and dashed off without a word of goodby or apology when you arrived. One would think he had seen a ghost."  this is an ironic statement because Mr. Nuttel thinks that Mrs. Sappleton is crazy so he runs away from her.
"Here we are, my dear," said the bearer of the white mackintosh, coming in through the window, "fairly muddy, but most of it's dry. Who was that who bolted out as we came up?"  This is also an ironic statement because the boys come home and Mr. Nuttel thinks that they are dead and have been for a very long time.

This story is in 3rd person. we dont knoe what Vera is thinking, so for all we know she can be telling the truth or she can be lieing when she tells Mr. Nuttel that the boys have not come home for 3 years and that her aunt still thinks that they are going to come back and that is why the window has been open.

Vera: Her name means Truth or to tell the truth. She is a self-possessed lady, and she needs to be entertained.

Mr.Nuttel: He has a nerve problem, he was sent to go to Mrs. Sappletons house because he was going to be there so some one told him that he should go stay with her.
